Soap Show Off: Spiced Mahogany

0 No Comments

My love for Spiced Mahogany began with a simple sample size sniff. (Say that five times fast!) It was included in the “men’s most popular” sample pack I purchased and the one that really stood out above all the rest. A natural choice when it came time to selecting a manly scent to offer up during my last fragrance mini-order.

Originally I was going to colour the soap read – as that is the colour I used with the sample. But then I started thinking. Mahogany… wood… wood grain… browns and black…. lines… how to swirl that… hrm. Then I stopped thinking and remembered that I am awesome when it comes to fluking a creation! I can usually never repeat them as I had no idea how I did it, but that first time… oh it’s epic. I’m the queen of “how on earth did I manage that?!” soaps…

So, in I jumped. Mix, colour, do what ever it was that I did, pour. Result?

Booyah! Fluked it again! Wait, I mean, oh look, it totally worked exactly how I planned and poured it to look. Yeah, that’s it. :)

My biggest fear was the batch overheating. Despite being popped in the freezer right after the pour for a couple of hours, it managed to heat itself back up while I was busy working on the next soap. Suffering through a heat wave with super muggy/humid weather, the best I could get the house was 25 degrees, but that was still in the “feels like an oven with a fan” range. After watching a crack appear and a little tumor build (what it looks like, to me, when a soap bubble pops out the crack), it was back into the freezer.

When it was cold enough to demold, I did. The 4 loaves in one mold was not helping it cool down, so I removed them and separated with some air flow between each to try and help them cool. I was worried looking at a couple of spots that it had overheated and the entire batch would have to be chucked. That was just over 6kgs of soap there!! Not to mention how awesome it smelled.

Praise the soap gods, all bars are safe. Completely gelled and darker than I had hoped, but no overheating cracks or weeping. Huzzah.

The bars are still quite dark, and really, all kinda look the same. This is probably the most stand out bar as it wasn’t just up and down lines of wood grain. Will be curious to see how they look after the cure…

My weekend of awesome!!

2 2 Comments

It feels like forever since I’ve just ‘kicked back’ on a weekend. There’s either been a market, preparation for a market, busy plans, kids parties, adult parties, big nights out partying. Always something. For the past two to almost three months, I just have not stopped. Until this weekend!!

This weekend was ALL about ME!! I dropped the kids off Friday night with their dad, picked up a couple of recent ebay wins, and stopped in to see my best friend. Then it was homeward bound and two days of pumping loud music, soap making, lotion making, house cleaning and general “me” time. It was almost a mini holiday that was LONG overdue. No having to worry about anything but what I wanted to do.

So what does two days of P!NK, Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna and ear-drum-bursting volume bring?

LOTS!!!! Xmas Soaps, manly men soaps, and banana (lollie kind) fun soaps. My house smells like a sexy man, eating banana lollies, wrapped under my Xmas tree. It’s a delightfully wicked smell.

The Banana Bugs and Bananasauruses. Sadly, despite having an equal amount of vanilla stabiliser to banana fragrance, they still didn’t stay yellow. Phooey.

The remainder of the banana mixture, including my first log/round soap. It was going to be an embed into a larger round mold that I was going to colour brown, but now I’m not so sure… it didn’t really stay yellow as it was meant to.

My super yummy smelling men’s soap!! This is a custom blend of sandalwood, musks, vanilla and other yummy goodies. The spots on the top is soap ash already, grrr… cosmetic issue only, sort of like men’s stubble.

My Christmas soaps!! MUCH better result with these ones. I soaped cooler as it was the same fragrance blend as the one that accelerated on me last time. This time I chilled my lye mixture after it was done mixing and won! Take that Xmas soaps!! ,,l,

In amongst all the soap making was some lotion making. Unscented and Lavender!! These have come out thinner and are more a body milk consistency than a ‘cream’. Spreads fantastically though, so happy with them.

Overall, it was a fantastic weekend. I probably annoyed the crap out of my neighbours with my music, and off-key singing *blush*, but given I only have it up every second fortnight at most, they can just live with it. A clean house, lots of soap, and relaxing. Can’t really get much better at the moment!!

Now I’m off to cut approximately 70 bars of soap!! Geez I wish I had my tank cutter right now!!

Back in the Kitchen!!

1 1 Comment

Thanks for all the well wishes yesterday! I would have been the last person to expect me back in the kitchen today after how I felt, but it seems as quickly as what ever it was came on, it also left. I feel back to my normal self today! Apart form a wicked, chesty cough what would rival any 80 year old smoker…

I decided to make a batch of soap early this morning to try and bridge the gap on the curing rack… started with BB’s Blackberry Sage as that’s one of the ones that is currently ready and, while I love the swirls I did on the previous batch, especially the colour, it produces light purple lather. Oopsie. Was working with a new colour and the bottles they come in don’t have drippers on them so I ended up with way more than I had planned.

I’ve since transferred all the colours to new bottles and decided that it was a good one to re-do first.

Was the last of that fragrance too. MUST get some more, oh my goodness it’s the yummiest scent!

After being so pleased with myself at the top swirls, I decided I wanted to do another soap. Another super popular one was the BB Black Raspberry and Vanilla I did last time. BIG, BIG hit that scent! And it’s such a dream to work with that it was an obvious choice.

I’ve been trying to get my colours right for this for a while now, and am pretty darn happy with today’s attempt!

I’m really curious to see that loaf cut up. I hate waiting!

The swirls on that top worked so well it got me thinking. I wonder how cool a soap would look if it had that effect the entire way through?!

Well, everything happens in three’s… right?

Right!

One for the men… Blue Musk! I can’t wait to see what these bars look like as I layered the colours from bottom to top and stuck my swirling stick all the way to through!

Regardless of swirls though – I am LOVING that blue colour! A benefit to goat’s milk soap is the white of the milk allows me to take a dark blue soap colour and use just a few drops to get the most amazing aqua blue!

Feels SO good to make soap again! After the past week’s break due to a sickly household, I’ve also been feeling the soapers version of writers block which has been beyond frustrating. But, like that best friend horse… I’m back in the saddle and off already! Ride like the wind Bullseye!!

Time to get back to it!

Xmas is over, in the blink of an eye like every year, so time to get back into a more relaxed day to day routine for a bit.

Jumping back into the kitchen I put together another portion of my Men’s Valentines Gift Pack together (followers on my Facebook Page have already had a sneak preview) and I have to say…. loooooove it!

I used The Perfect Man fragrance and swirled blue into blue. I wanted to go a dark blue swirl into a light blue base. Instead I got the coolest blue ever swirl into a blue-tinged-white base. Given the scent is ‘The Perfect Man’ which aaaalmost smells like Cool Water, I think it’s a perfect match! LOVE IT!

Will DEFINITELY be stocking this scent full time! (Even if it’s just to make batches and scent my house with! YUM!
