Soap Show Off: Chai Tea and Cinnamon Sugar

0 No Comments

Today was soap cutting day!! After the weekends marathon soaping session, there were a LOT of cuts to be made. Gosh I need to save up for a soap cutter…

First on the show off runway is the Chai Tea and Cinnamon Sugar Soap!

I purchased the Chai Tea scent as it was pimped as a top selling fragrance. Perhaps it’s just my nose, but I’m not really sure how it became a top seller…

It’s lived in the fragrance cupboard for months. Coming into Winter and wanting to get a jump start on the more ‘warmer’ smells, the bottle was pulled out and put back numerous times. It just wasn’t grabbing me.

The reason for this soap existing is thanks to one of my lovely customers who sniffed a few fragrances for me and told me that the Chai Tea would be nice with some Cinnamon… I have that! A small sample bottle of Cinnamon Sugar in fact. Done!

After getting some colour feedback, it was a soaping I went.

Chai Tea moves FAST!!! Before I had even finished mixing in some brown to one part, the white was almost a solid mass in the bucket. Yikes!! As a result, no swirls… boy that was a hard thing to accept at the time. I had to really fight the urge to try and swirl. Not too bad swirl-less…

In fact, if you look really close, you can see there is still a pattern to it. With the summer heat sitting in the mid 30′s all weekend, I gave up trying to fight the gel phase and instead just tried to stop over heating. As a result, there’s a very cool pattern in the soap – the gylcerin rivers.

I do have one favourite bar too…

I love it! One random blotch of white and it’s turned a bar of soap, into a desert/mountains landscape with a moon… very cool.

Chai Tea: Chai Tea is a wonderfully warm and comforting drink as a fun alternative to coffee (it still has a good wallop of caffeine in it as well)! It has traditional Earl Grey Tea with its delicious citrus notes of Bergamot and Sicily Lemon along with a base and heart notes of Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Tahitian Vanilla and a little bit of Allspice.

Cinnamon Sugar: When we dreamed up this fragrance, we were envisioning something that was like a Red Hot Cinnamon with a touch of sweet. The fragrance ended up being more cinnamon sticky bun sweet than spicy and we’re in love with the result!

Curious to see how dark the bars go with Vanilla in both scents… time will reveal.

Back in the Kitchen!!

1 1 Comment

Thanks for all the well wishes yesterday! I would have been the last person to expect me back in the kitchen today after how I felt, but it seems as quickly as what ever it was came on, it also left. I feel back to my normal self today! Apart form a wicked, chesty cough what would rival any 80 year old smoker…

I decided to make a batch of soap early this morning to try and bridge the gap on the curing rack… started with BB’s Blackberry Sage as that’s one of the ones that is currently ready and, while I love the swirls I did on the previous batch, especially the colour, it produces light purple lather. Oopsie. Was working with a new colour and the bottles they come in don’t have drippers on them so I ended up with way more than I had planned.

I’ve since transferred all the colours to new bottles and decided that it was a good one to re-do first.

Was the last of that fragrance too. MUST get some more, oh my goodness it’s the yummiest scent!

After being so pleased with myself at the top swirls, I decided I wanted to do another soap. Another super popular one was the BB Black Raspberry and Vanilla I did last time. BIG, BIG hit that scent! And it’s such a dream to work with that it was an obvious choice.

I’ve been trying to get my colours right for this for a while now, and am pretty darn happy with today’s attempt!

I’m really curious to see that loaf cut up. I hate waiting!

The swirls on that top worked so well it got me thinking. I wonder how cool a soap would look if it had that effect the entire way through?!

Well, everything happens in three’s… right?

Right!

One for the men… Blue Musk! I can’t wait to see what these bars look like as I layered the colours from bottom to top and stuck my swirling stick all the way to through!

Regardless of swirls though – I am LOVING that blue colour! A benefit to goat’s milk soap is the white of the milk allows me to take a dark blue soap colour and use just a few drops to get the most amazing aqua blue!

Feels SO good to make soap again! After the past week’s break due to a sickly household, I’ve also been feeling the soapers version of writers block which has been beyond frustrating. But, like that best friend horse… I’m back in the saddle and off already! Ride like the wind Bullseye!!

My first Fail!

3 3 Comments

My first fail! I’ve had a lot of ‘not quite 100% mini-fails’, but this is my first real, complete, FAIL! And I’m sooooo happy!

Why? Because so far, everything has been so, well, easy. It’s just come naturally, it’s made sense, it’s all worked out. If it hasn’t, it’s been close enough that I still wouldn’t call it a failure.

But that lucky streak… ended today!

My good friend ordered some of my Orange Essential Oil soap. While getting ready to make it, I wondered to myself how I could make it a learning experience as well. I already know how to make the standard bar, it was time to push myself and see what else I could do. As soon as I made that decision, the idea came like a lightning bolt. I was going to make the orange soap… look like a slice of Orange!

After googling for what I had in mind, I found some tutorials online and eventually stumbled onto a picture of exactly what I was looking for! This is what the soap was MEANT to look like:

Soap Queen Orange Soap SliceSadly, my first attempt looked more like the ugly, inbred cousin of the above…

Glaaarg…. meee ooooraaange /drooool

Flipping it over to the bottom side didn’t improve at all – although it did mask some of the ugly!

My second attempt was a little better. Aided by the immaculately timed delivery of my clear soap, I used that to help hold the pieces in place prior to pouring the white. Unfortunately I used too much clear, so there was no room for the white. Doh!

When all else fails with the sliced orange, just make… an orange!

That’s one big ball of soap!

I learnt a lot though! (Don’t I always?) The first major lesson was that $2.00 circle cutters from the local Asian-has-it-all shop does not cut it. As usual, no patience on my part and wanting to jump head first into the project saw me grab the first cutters I could find and that didn’t help. Now that I’ve gotten the first attempt out of my system however, I will go in search of the proper (actually round) cookie cutters and try again.

Use less clear base to hold it in, and get a proper round mold if possible. For some reason the ’4 shapes in 1′ plastic mold I had wasn’t helpful when it came to putting the cut circle back in. I had to really push it in to make it sit at the bottom, which I found weird as I had only moments earlier pulled it out of the exact same spot.

I do hope there’s lots of orange scented soap lovers in my circle however. Because I WILL perfect these!
